How Does a Kidney Biopsy Work?

1. Medical Evaluation

The nephrologist reviews your medical history, medications, blood and urine reports and other relevant investigations.

2. Pre-Biopsy Assessment

Blood pressure, blood tests and other necessary investigations may be performed to determine whether the procedure is appropriate and safe.

3. Tissue Sample

In a commonly used approach, a small sample of kidney tissue is obtained using a biopsy needle under appropriate imaging guidance and local anesthesia.

4. Laboratory Examination

The kidney tissue is sent for specialized laboratory examination.

5. Treatment Planning

The biopsy findings are reviewed by the treating doctor and used along with other clinical information to plan appropriate management.

What Should You Tell Your Doctor Before a Biopsy?

Tell your doctor about:

• Blood-thinning medicines
• Aspirin or other medicines affecting blood clotting
• Any bleeding or clotting problems
• Allergies
• Previous surgeries or procedures
• Current medical conditions
• All medicines and supplements you are taking

Do not stop any prescribed medication on your own. Your doctor will advise you if any medication needs to be adjusted before the procedure.
